Impact testing
Standard test methods for notched bar impact testing of metallic materials
Describes notched-bar impact tests (Charpy and Izod configurations as applicable) for metallic materials, including machine checks, specimen requirements, and reporting used in North American material specifications.
Test method
A notched specimen is fractured by a pendulum; absorbed energy is determined from the machine scale or encoder system with defined procedures for alignment, lubrication (if applicable), and verification specimens.
Specimen requirements
Notch location and geometry must meet E23 tolerances; specimen seating on anvils is critical. Temperature conditioning and transfer time limits apply for tests below or above ambient conditions.
ASTM E23 and ISO 148 share similar physics but differ in procedural details and specimen naming conventions.
